The Dancer's Creative Experience
Dance photography requires an intricate blend of athletic timing and creative artistry, capturing the peak of human movement before it vanishes. My goal as a dance photographer is to provide an empowering, highly collaborative session that showcases your technique, strength, and unique artistic expression in stunning visual form. Whether you are a ballet dancer needing audition headshots, a contemporary performer building a professional portfolio, or a local Seattle dance troupe capturing a new piece, our session is built around your specific discipline. From our initial mood-boarding phase, we plan every detail—selecting the ideal architectural backdrops, urban street corners, or controlled studio sets that will complement and elevate the mood of your choreography.
Wardrobe That Complements Movement
When it comes to selecting wardrobe pieces that look exceptional on camera, dance portraiture thrives on form, texture, and movement. Form-fitting garments—such as leotards, tights, and unitards—translate beautifully to the screen because they clearly define your alignment, musculature, and extensions for technical review. Conversely, loose, flowing fabrics—like long tulle skirts, lightweight silk capes, or oversized linen shirts—add incredible drama and a sense of motion, trailing elegantly behind a jump or turn. I recommend focusing on rich, solid colors that stand out cleanly against our chosen background, avoiding complex patterns that might distract from the lines of your body.
Freezing Time with High-Speed Light
To bring these dynamic movements to life, my approach relies on specialized, high-speed lighting techniques. If we are shooting outdoors, I utilize natural light and fast shutter speeds to sharply freeze your movement against the Pacific Northwest landscape. In a controlled studio environment, I use professional strobe lighting with an incredibly short flash duration. This advanced technique allows us to crisply freeze a mid-air jump, a rapid pirouette, or a dramatic splash of flour or water, without a single hint of motion blur. I sculpt the light precisely to define your muscle tone, highlight your facial expression, and give the entire image a dramatic, stage-like depth.
Honoring Your Technical Precision
Most importantly, your safety and artistic integrity are the foundation of how I operate. I understand that dance is physically demanding, which is why we move at a mindful, unhurried pace that honors your body's limits. I provide a supportive space with plenty of time for warming up, stretching, and reviewing your frames on a monitor together as we shoot. This collaborative review lets us fine-tune minor technical details—like a foot extension, hand placement, or head angle—ensuring the final images are both technically precise and emotionally resonant.
